There are purposes of an opening sequence, these are:
- to introduce the main characters, setting and plot.
- Outline the people involved in the creation.
- Pull the audience into the world of the film.
- Make the audience want to watch on.
MEMENTO ANALYSIS
The four key elements of the opening sequence in Memento helps the audience to understand that the narrative is being told in reverse, adding the sense of mystery and curiosity to the sequence. making the audience answer questions such as: why does the protagonist have this memory condition? and whats its in the basement?
The first key element is Mise en scene. this gave the audience a sense of establishment on the characters and setting of the sequence. For instance, the hotel room; this was completely empty with no props, objects or possessions which can normally help the audience find out more about his personality however as they were no such thing in this scene it made the protagonist seem plain and dehumanized himself, making the audience seem curious about this character. The protagonist made prop seen through out the opening sequence was the gun, this makes him seem dangerous and an unsatble character.
Another key element is Camerawork, the use of of the long shot, when the protagonist is walking up to the abandoned building helps to create distance between him and his target (Teddy) as well as the audience, which creates tension as the audience knows whats coming next.
Thirdly, Editing is a key element during this opening sequence , it allows the audience engage further into the sequence. For instance the use of shot reverse shot used during the car scene helps to build the relation between the two characters, the camera itself would stay on Leonard longer than Teddy showing his higher status in the scene between the two characters.
Lastly, the use of sound adds the climax as well as releases tension during the sequence as it is in reverse. For instance the use of sound effects and hyperbolic sound of the gun shot. This releases tension at the end of the scene from the build of the climax. And the sound motif involving eerie music creating a dark setting. Lastly the Dialogue "come down to the basement". this makes the audience question what the character knows and wanting to know more.
